Best practices about titles - what can you do in Sembot?

The title of the product has a very important role. It is one of the first things we see in advertisements and online stores. There are usually phrases that we type to search for products we are interested in. So it is worth making sure that titles and phrases presented in them are as good as possible. The right construction of the title will make the product appear to the right people and cause higher conversions..

What are the requirements and best practices?

In order for the product to be displayed at all, certain requirements must be met. Otherwise, you will experience rejection by Google. What are the requirements?

  1. There is a character limit in the title and it is 150 characters.

  2. Use the most relevant title that accurately reflects the essence of the product.

  3. The title must be related to the product being linked to. The title in the ad and on the landing page does not have to be the same, but it is important that it describes the same product.

  4. Avoid generalities and distinguish between product versions. If you are dealing with clothing that comes in many sizes and colors, include this in the title (for example: yellow dress size M). It's also important that these values are included in the relevant product attributes. It is worth creating duplicates for this purpose.

  5. Write correctly, without language errors.

The best actions you can take are

  1. Use all characters available.

  2. Provide the most important information at the beginning.

  3. Use keywords (product name, brand, detailed information about the category, e.g. "waterproof"). *Use keywords in titles or whole phrases in duplicates.

  4. Create a short_title attribute that is useful for mobile devices. How to create it in Sembot? You can read about that below.

What you are not allowed to do?

  1. Do not leave language errors.

  2. Do not use words from other languages, unless they are well known, e.g. T-shirt, sushi.

  3. Do not add capital letters, as this is associated with spam. Capital letters are only allowed in certain aspects (e.g. currency).

  4. Don't add promotional text. Don't include the price, sale price, promotion date, delivery date, or company name in the title. Include it in the appropriate attributes.

  5. Don't overuse spaces. Use the available number of characters to describe the product more precisely.

How to build titles in individual categories?

Here are the market recommendations:

Fashion:  [Brand] + [Gender] + [Title/Product name] + [Product type] + [Color] + [Size] + [Material]

Electronics: [Brand] + [Product type] + [Title] + [Attributes] + [Model]

Books: [Title] + [Product type] + [Format] + [Author]

Health & Beauty: [Brand] + [Gender] + [Title] +  [Product type] + [Attributes]

House and garden: [Brand] + [Product type] + [Attributes]

However, it's best to test different title modifications with duplicates.

How you can use Sembot?

Rules are useful for changing titles. At the beginning, it is best to filter the desired products and then select Create Rule.

After selecting the title column, the following panel appears with many options:

  • Generate value - this option allows you to create a completely new title. Click Generate value, then the plus sign below. In the place of value, enter the values manually, and in the place of property, set the given attribute.

  • Override - allows you to override selected titles with a specific value.

  • add end - allows you to add a specific value to the end of an existing title.

  • add start - allows you to add a specific value at the beginning of an existing title.

  • Default case - sets the first letter to uppercase, leaving the rest lowercase.

  • Capitalized Case - changes the first letters of each word to uppercase, the rest are lowercase.

  • lower case - sets all letters to lower case.

  • UPPER CASE - all letters become uppercase.

  • replace - this is the find and replace option. It allows you to find a specific word or phrase and replace it with the desired one.

  • set empty - sets the title as empty.

How to set the short_title attribute?

First, the column needs to be visible in the table in the Products tab section. To do this, click on the three vertical tiles on the right.

Then, by clicking on the plus, search for the short_title attribute. With the column now visible, you can set the rule. Click Create Rule and select the short_title column. The same panel as when changing the title will appear. We recommend using the Generate value option and using dynamic attributes (properties).
